Stepinac Staves Off Farrell Comeback

The Crusaders of Archbishop Stepinac in White Plains stopped the Monsignor Farrell Lions from making a comeback on Tuesday in CHSAA Varsity Lacrosse action.

Stepinac came out early, playing hard and aggressive on offense. Led by four scores in a row by Senior Justin Caba (7 goals, 1 assist), the Crusaders had thoughts of putting Farrell away early. They threw the Lions off their game, drawing penalties and forcing them to make bad passes.

Despite Stepinac's incredible first half performance, it was the Lions who showed great resiliency in the final quarter.

Led by the conjoined efforts of Anthony Mendez (3 goals, 1 assist) and Sid Cohen (5 goals), Farrell tallied four goals in a row, cutting the lead to one. Stepinac, in an apparent panic, committed two costly penalties in the last two minutes which led to one of the four goals. The final penalty, a vicious slash to the helmet, came with under a minute left. Farrell looked to tie it up with this man up situation.

It was Stepinac who prevailed, however, holding the Lions' man up two only a couple of low percentage shots. The Crusaders cleared the ball to their attackmen with under 10 seconds left, and held the ball until the final whistle.

Monsignor Farrell received great play from Frank Greenwald (3 assists, 10-5 faceoff record), James Kenny (1 assist), and Rob Gelormino (1 assist), as well as strong play in net by Chris Vitiello who made 6 saves in the losing effort.

Farrell looks to end their 3 game losing skid when they match up against St. Francis Prepatory at home on Thursday and Fordham Prepatory at home on Saturday.
